KANSAS CITY, MO – January 8, 2019. The Department of Energy (DOE) identified Genesis Systems LLC to represent the United States’ water start-up community in the development and launch of the DOE’s Water Security Grand Challenge. Anthony Contento, Ph.D. (Water and Sustainability Scientist for Genesis Systems LLC) and Mr. Mitchell Walrod (current owner) attended all development activities at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

This White House initiated challenge was recently described by Secretary of Energy, Rick Perry when he noted, “Through this Grand Challenge, we will advance technology and innovation to meet the global need for safe, secure and affordable water. We’ll call on the power of competition to spur innovation, draw on the strengths of our partners and stakeholders, and tap into the expertise and world-class capabilities of the DOE’s 17 national labs.”

Genesis Systems was the only water start-up in the United States selected to support this important step to support a critical new global industry. The experience and contributions of Genesis System LLC’s team helped guide the DOE to the development of imperative benchmarks and realistic incentives in a burgeoning new water sector.

Investment in sustainable water development tech is critical because the world’s condensed freshwater sources such as aquifers, lakes and rivers are being exhausted due to poor management, drought, and pollution. Genesis Systems LLC is a pioneer in the field of atmospheric water generation which creates water from the air.

According to the United Nations, water scarcity is already creating stresses that will grow by 2050, when the world’s population is forecast to reach between 9.4 billion and 10.2 billion (up from 7.7 billion today), with two in every three people living in cities. Demand for water is projected to rise fastest in developing countries. Meanwhile, climate change will put added stress on supplies as wet regions become wetter and dry regions become drier.

Using a coordinated suite of prizes, competitions, early-stage research and development funding opportunities, critical partnerships, and other programs, the Water Security Grand Challenge sets the following goals for the United States to reach by 2030:

1. Launch desalination technologies that deliver cost-competitive clean water
2. Transform the energy sector’s produced water from a waste to a resource
3. Achieve near-zero water impact for new thermoelectric power plants, and significantly lower freshwater use intensity within the existing fleet
4. Double resource recovery from municipal wastewater
5. Develop small, modular energy-water systems for urban, rural, tribal, national security, and disaster response settings.
